Skills

Skills represent the training, knowledge and experience that your character has developed throughout their life - from basic abilities to advanced techniques. Each skill has 20 levels and each level is linked to one of your character's Attributes. The linked attribute may affect your character's performance with a bonus, penalty or it may not change the numbers at all.

Each Skill will have a unique mix of attributes at each level, thus characters can greatly benefit from having a well-rounded set of attributes!

Skill Components

Each skill is made up of three parts:

  1. Primary Skill Components (Levels 1-4):
    Broad foundational learning that may contribute to many different fields.
  2. Secondary Skill Components (Levels 5-10):
    Focused field-specific knowledge that builds upon foundational learning.
  3. Tertiary Skill Components (Levels 11-20):
    Deep specialist knowledge in a narrow field of study.

To create a full 20-level skill, you must put these three components together. Secondary and Tertiary Components have allowed parent components which tell you which components they are compatible with. In certain cases there may be multiple valid combinations; this offers some variety in how to develop your develop your character toward a particular end goal.

Training Skill Components

  • Training a skill component at a particular level costs Experience Points (XP). The XP cost to learn is listed for each level of the skill component.
  • You don't have to learn skill levels in order but lower levels are usually cheaper.
  • You might benefit from skipping ahead if you have a more suitable linked attribute at a higher skill level that would give you a better bonus.

Skill Properties

Skill Rating

Skill Rating is your total level of training in a particular skill. Count every level that is trained and ignore all of the others. As such, skill rating is a value that is always in the range 0-20.

Skill Modifier

Note in the table above that, at each level, you can receive a +1 bonus, a -1 penalty, 0 no change or an indication C that the modifier is already capped. This is determined through a combination of the Skill level's associated attribute and your character's attributes.

The number in brackets ([Total]) is the cumulative total of modifiers from the associated attribute.

The modifier is determined at each level as follows:

  • Skill Level is trained
    • Character Attribute Modifier is zero: 0
    • Character Attribute Modifier is positive and the cumulative total skill modifier associated with that attribute is less than the character's attribute modifier: +1
    • Character Attribute Modifier is negative and the cumulative total skill modifier associated with that attribute is greater than the character's attribute modifier: -1
    • Otherwise: Capped C
  • Skill level is untrained
    • Character Attribute Modifier is zero or greater: 0
    • Character Attribute Modifier is negative and the cumulative total skill modifier associated with that attribute is greater than the character's attribute modifier: -1
    • Otherwise: Capped C

The total modifier to a skill is then calculate by adding up the modifiers for each level and then adding the skill rating. This means that skill modifiers can theoretically range between -20 (for a character with 0 training and horribly mismatched attributes) and 40(for a character with maximum training and perfectly matching attributes).

Athletics is the skill of applying physical prowess, often requiring feats of stamina, fitness and explosivity. It is the basis for various forms of movement such as running, sprinting, climbing and swimming as well as physical contests like the martial arts.
